Composting and the Role of Biodegradable Plastics

The growing global population is generating ever increasing amounts of garbage or waste. Much of this waste is land-filled. But this method of waste disposal has its limitations. For one, existing landfills are fast running out of space, and with the growing population, there isn’t enough space to construct more.

Typically, 30% of Municipal Solid Waste is organic yard and food waste. This organic matter, when buried in landfills, decomposes in an anaerobic process and generates Methane, a gas that has a Global Warming Index 12 times that of CO2. As a result, many governments around the world are supporting legislation for the diversion of organic waste from landfills, and towards an environmentally friendly alternative such as centralized composting facilities.

Biodegradable Product

Composting is an ecologically and environmentally sound approach to transferring biodegradable waste to useful product. Compost use reduces chemical inputs, suppresses crop diseases, replenishes organic carbon, increases water & nutrient retention, improves soil productivity, i.e. promotes “SUSTAINABLE  AGRICULTURE!”

Biodegradable Plastics play an important role in aiding the collection and source separation of organic waste. These fully biodegradable and compostable plastics can be used as compost bags or bin liners for food waste collection.

Unlike bags made of regular polyethylene, bags made of compostable plastics do not interfere with the composting process nor in any way degrade the quality of the final compost.

Natur-Tec offers a proprietary biodegradable plastic resin that can be converted into film and bags of any size and thicknesses. This resin can be processed on regular blown-film equipment. NTIC’s biodegradable resin meets all international standards for compostable plastics such as ASTM D6400 (U.S.), EN 13432 (Europe) and GreenPLA (Japan) among others.
