Job Title: Junior Polymer Chemist – Natur-Tec

Purpose
As a Jr. Polymer Chemist in Natur-Tec R&D laboratory, this individual will use their knowledge of materials to support new product development efforts of biobased and compostable products. Reporting to the Director, R&D, the Jr. Chemist/Engineer will work closely with Sr. Formulation Engineer and other Engineers in the team to conduct material characterization, support product development and certification processes for compostability and regulatory compliance.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Support development team with performance evaluation of product protoypes. Conduct mechanical, thermal, and physical testing (e.g., tensile, flexural, DSC, TGA, MFI) as required for new product development.
- Collaborate with formulators to qualify and benchmark new raw materials and compounds
- Support global businesses with evaluation of competitive samples
- Maintain lab equipment and ensure calibration and compliance with SOPs
- Prepare lab reports and presentations.
- Assist in preparation of samples and documentation for compostability certifications (e.g., ASTM D6400, EN 13432). Coordinate testing with external labs (e.g., biodegradation, disintegration studies) .
- Follow all safety protocols when handling chemicals, including use of appropriate PPE
- Ensure proper handling and disposal of laboratory waste in accordance with safety and regulatory guidelines
Job Requirements
- Possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Polymer Engineering; Associate’s degree in Chemistry considered with experience
- 0–3 years of experience (internships or co-ops preferred)
- Technical Skills:
- Exposure to polymer processing or materials testing is a plus
- Basic understanding of polymer science and material properties
- Familiarity with characterization techniques (Instron, DSC, TGA, MFI, etc.
- Soft Skills:
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Have the ability to work in a team orientated environment
- Be able to complete tasks to timeframe
- Proficiency in Microsoft office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, and respirators
- Willingness to travel (<5%)
- Ability to lift 50 lbs (intermittently)
